Deputy Prime Minister Suren Papikyan was elected Chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees


The Board of Trustees of Yerevan State University (YSU) today elected Deputy Prime Minister Suren Papikyan Chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees.

The first session of the newly formed Board of Trustees of the Yerjan State University Foundation took place today in the conference hall of YSU Academic Council, with five issues on the agenda, during which the President-Secretary was elected, YSU website reports.

“The agenda of YSU Board of Trustees No. 1 included five issues: election of the Chairman of the Public Council, election of the Secretary, cancellation of the previous rector election competition, change of the rector election regulations, announcement of a new rector election competition,” the YSU statement reads.

RA Deputy Prime Minister Suren Papikyan has been nominated, who has been elected Chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees.

Suren Papikyan graduated from YSU Faculty of History with a bachelor’s and master’s degree, then studied at the postgraduate course of St. Petersburg State University. He was the RA Minister of Territorial Administration և Development, then the RA Minister of Territorial Administration և Infrastructure, and in 2021 On August 2, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.

Yeghishe Kirakosyan, the representative of the Republic of Armenia in the European Court of Human Rights, was elected Secretary of the YSU Board of Trustees.

Yeghishe Kirakosyan graduated from YSU Faculty of Law, studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, took international law courses in Medford, Massachusetts, received master’s degrees at Georgetown University, Stanford University.

YSU Board of Trustees by a majority of votes canceled the previous rector election competition, made a change in the rector election regulations, announced a new competition.

The election of the rector will take place on December 17.

Before the 2018 revolution, the chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees was the then RA President Serzh Sargsyan. The heads of the boards of trustees of other universities were various high-ranking state officials.

Until 2018, many members of the ruling government of the current government strongly criticized the fact that the universities were politicized and partisan.
