The topic of today’s program is somewhat unusual: today we discuss culture, the importance of culture as a tool, how to present history through culture or impose your will on the world through history. If you win a cultural war, you will eventually win a political confrontation.

What is the significance of culture in the modern context? It is, by and large, focused on the public, PR. This is the story that culture tells the world about itself. Before making our history, we, as Armenians or Armenia, must look back and see what our history has been like in 30 or 100 years.

If we look at the story told about us over the years, we will see three things: first, we are the victims of the first genocide of the 20th century. We must understand that no matter how much we tell this story, no one is interested in it, because we have told the wrong side of this story. The key is not the crucifixion, but the resurrection. This is exactly what should have been said during these years.

The second part of our history is the collective struggle for the liberation of the people of Artsakh. The liberation struggle here պայք The struggle not to succumb to the second genocide because of our omission has finally reached the point where our adversary demands territorial integrity.

The third story we love to tell is that we are the first Christian nation. This is not only inappropriate in the modern context, but is also perceived negatively. At a time when almost the entire Western world, especially Europe, is striving for de-Christianization, this story is not only useless, but can present us in a reactionary light.

To win a cultural war, you must understand the demands of the cultural market, try to adapt the stories to those demands. And again it’s not possible which is right և fair, what’s your reality և it’s appropriate to it. You need to connect your story to the main themes of the day և stories. You will ask why? Because modern public culture has been the most influential force for 50 years. All over the world, especially in the West, it has destroyed conservative cultures, supreme leaders, political movements, religions, conservative beliefs and values. The reason is clear. The appeal of the ideology of modern public culture is that it does not require self-sacrifice. It only requires that you be prepared to engage in passive entertainment, which is contrary to political or religious movements, which have always demanded sacrifice and self-restraint.

Because modern popular culture has been the most influential force for 50 years. All over the world, especially in the West, it has destroyed conservative cultures, supreme leaders, political movements, religions, conservative beliefs and values. The reason is simple: the attractiveness of the ideology of modern public culture is that it does not require self-sacrifice. It only requires that you be prepared to engage in passive entertainment, as opposed to political or religious movements, which have always demanded sacrifice and self-restraint.

For example, Twitter. US President Biden has 32 million followers, Kim Kardashian – 70 million. Who has more influence on global cultural events, on what people do or think on a daily basis, the President of the United States or celebrities?

What are the guiding principles of modern Western culture? There are four main points.

First, it is instinctively anti-totalitarian, pro-democratic, emphasizes the history of freedom. This culture hates everything totalitarian.

Second, this culture believes that the individual is always political, անձնական against any restriction on personal freedom և self-expression. If you want to understand the Western governments’ obsession with the rights of the LGBT community, you have to understand that for them it is the front line of freedom.

Let me give you an example: during the Karabakh war, the Azerbaijani-Turkish regimes targeted the Armenian temple in Shushi with long-range missiles, more than once. The attacks took place while there were civilians inside the temple. This attracted some attention, but imagine how much attention this fact would have attracted if the center of gay and lesbian women in Shushi had been attacked instead of a temple. If there was such a place, if it was attacked, it would be in the headlines of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Times, Le Monde and other Western newspapers, because some people may and others do not.

The third principle of modern public culture I broadly call anti-racism. It is against everything that it considers fanaticism. This opposition to fanaticism has two kinds of sacrifices: sacred sacrifices that deserve protection and non-sacred sacrifices that do not deserve protection. Our task is to become part of the first category.

The fourth principle is the belief that the whole world has the same value system, from the villages of Afghanistan to Peru, Paris and London. A good example of this is the US Government’s $ 700 million program to teach contemporary conceptual art to rural Afghan women. And then people ask how the Taliban won. Returning to our region, guess who is the walking antithesis of these four principles, this man [Իլհամ Ալիևը].

How to build our history so that it conforms to the basic principles of modern Western culture?

First, we must constantly repeat that Armenia is an island of freedom in the ocean of dictatorship.

Second, we must talk about the fact that we are a democratic state, which is under attack by neo-fascists. This should be repeated over and over again whenever possible.

We pay a high price for fanaticism, racist hatred and prejudice. Our history of Armenia և Artsakh must be built in the context of anti-racism, anti-fascism. What matters to us is the generalization of our pain.

Third, tolerance և diversity. There are many examples here as well. Let’s take one of the latter. In Armenia, in the streets of Yerevan, one can see Azeris from Iran who speak Azerbaijani every day, nobody does anything to them. You can meet them in the queues of vaccination points, which they get for free.

We know very well that if two Armenians dare, or allow them to go to Baku and speak Armenian there, they will be lynched. Another example. In Armenia, a transgender person spoke from the tribune of the National Assembly. Azerbaijan is considered the worst place in Europe for LGBT people. This should be repeated every time we talk about Ali’s regime.

Regardless of our attitude towards this issue, if we want to attract attention, we must be able to formulate and present the ideas correctly.

And as a conclusion, we must clearly formulate, repeat the concept until it becomes a dominant story. We are a country that exports TUMO centers, while Ali exports killers who kill journalists and dissidents around the world.

The culture and language turned into weapons is a war waged by other methods.
